What CMMC Level 2 actually costs in 2026
Nobody in this niche publishes real numbers, so here they are. The consultant range, the C3PAO fee, the tooling, and the honest levers that move the total, with no sales fog. Then the platform alternative.
The full cost picture, line by line
Your real number depends on one thing above all others: how much of your business touches CUI. Scope it down first and every line below shrinks.
| Cost | 2026 range | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Consultant readiness engagement | $35,000 to $150,000 | The traditional path. A firm scopes your CUI, writes your SSP and 110 policies, and preps evidence over 6 to 12 months. Priced by headcount and scope. |
| C3PAO certification assessment | $20,000 to $50,000+ | Only if a contract requires third party certification. This is the assessor's fee to certify you, separate from getting ready. A self assessment filed in SPRS has no assessor fee. |
| GCC High or compliant cloud | $40 to $60 per user / month | Only if you actually need it. Many small CUI footprints do not. The scoping decision below is what determines this, and getting it wrong is the most common overspend. |
| FIPS validated encryption + tooling | $0 to $15,000 / year | Endpoint, logging, and encryption tooling. Much of it you may already own inside Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace; the work is configuring and evidencing it, not buying more. |
| The Custodia Level 2 Accelerator | $1,499 / month | The platform builds all 110 requirements with you, generates the SSP, POA&M, and Audit Room, includes Level 1, and puts an officer alongside you for 180 days. A fraction of a consultant engagement. |
Skip the six-figure consultant engagement
The Level 2 Accelerator is $1,499 a month: all 110 requirements, your SSP, POA&M, and Audit Room, the Level 1 platform included, and a credentialed officer for 180 days. Filed in 180 days, or we work free until you are.
No credit card. Phase 2 begins Nov 10, 2026, when applicable DoD solicitations start requiring a current Level 2 status to win the award.
Questions, answered
Why is CMMC Level 2 so much more expensive than Level 1?+
Level 1 is 15 safeguarding requirements and a self attestation. Level 2 is 110 requirements, 320 assessment objectives, a scored SSP, a POA&M, and evidence an assessor can walk through. That is why traditional readiness runs $35,000 to $150,000. The platform compresses the method into a subscription so you are not paying for a firm's hours.
Do I have to pay for a C3PAO?+
Only if your contract requires third party certification. Many Level 2 contracts accept a self assessment filed in SPRS with an annual affirmation, which has no assessor fee. Build the package once and it serves both tracks: file the self assessment now, hand the same Audit Room to a C3PAO when a contract demands it.
Do I need GCC High for CMMC Level 2?+
Not always. GCC High matters for certain export controlled or ITAR data, but plenty of small CUI footprints are compliant on commercial Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace configured correctly. The single biggest cost lever is scope: shrink where CUI lives, often to one enclave, before you buy anything.
What is the cheapest honest path to Level 2?+
Scope tightly, use tooling you already own, self assess where your contracts allow it, and put the money into getting the evidence right rather than into consultant hours. The Accelerator is built around exactly that sequence.
